Update 7/11/06: VIRGIN TERRITORY

I think the Nintendo DS has a good bit of untapped potential. Between the two screens, the stylus, and the wireless Internet connectivity, there's some things you can do with this system that you can't really do with others.

For one, old games that previously just didn't work on a console will work on a DS. Starcraft for example. Blizzard could hire a team to simply remake their classic game for the DS. You put informational stuff like the minimap and unit stats on the top screen, along the button icons. On the bottom screen, you have the gameplay screen, with small buttons at the top of the screen under their respective icons from the top screen. Left-click is a simple tap, right-click is holding down a button and tapping, and for drag-select you just hold down another button and then do the drag. You can have a button for unit-type select, and so on. The two screens really help make up for the screens being very small. They could also port over Diablo 2. These are games that are still very popular, and could be on the DS but aren't.

Another thing the DS lacks although it has the capability for it is a MMORPG. I wouldn't port any of the existing MMORPGs over to it, but rather create a new one, designed for the DS. It could absolutely work. If you want to type, hit the keyboard button and a keyboard pops up for you to type on. You could also have macros so you don't have to tap out a message every time. It would absolutely work. However, it would have to be designed to allow quick logouts, since it is a portable system. You can't rely on being able to play for a long period of time on a handheld. Of course, few games on handheld systems actually accomodate this reality. It's also true that real life interferes with MMO's on home systems, as well. There's even the fact that, sometimes, you could've kept playing if you were able to take your computer with you, which wouldn't be a problem on the DS so long as you can maintain Internet connectivity wherever it is you're going. I do think that the 40-man raid just isn't going to work, though (which, IMHO, is a blessing in disguise).

Now, I haven't played many DS games yet, but I'm sure at least some of them have a feature where, for single-player games, you can upload your scores and records to a database so that you can remain competetive even when you can't play against someone head-to-head. It also just gives you something else to strive for. Gotta beat that best time, or high score, or whatever (if you say anything about catching Pokemon, I'll catch one for you and shove it down your throat).

What's really frustrating is Children of Mana. Here you finally have a new Secret of Mana styled game, with a 4-man party, and the multiplayer is only playable over the wireless LAN, not over the WiFi. Why is that? Here's a perfect opportunity for a game to be played over the Internet, and they purposefully blow it? It's absolutely baffling.

Yeah, I'm going to get a DS this fall. Currently, the only reason I want one is the Castlevania game, but this fall we see another Castlevania game, a new Zelda game, and Children of Mana (despite it's major deficiency). Also, I should have money again by then, so long as I stop getting new unexpected major expenses. I would just like to see some more of the deficiencies filled.
