ERIC CLAPTON
I admit, the first time I ever heard of Eric Clapton was when he won a Grammy for his Unplugged album. I know I had heard the name before, and I had heard the song "Wonderful Tonight", which I still don't like, but I never really knew how great and legendary he was. I still didn't know this until some time after I had my own copy of "Eric Clapton Unplugged", which I thought to be a great blues album. I truly think I never gave his other works a second thought until I read his commentary in the Robert Johnson box set. That was when I first became truly interested in hearing more Clapton.

Eric has lead a most interesting life, however little you hear about it. His first successful band was the Yardbirds, which put him alongside Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. A year after he left the band, he formed the band Cream, probably most famous for their song "Sunshine of Your Love". His next band, Blind Faith, was as ephemeral as the rest, lasting less than a year. Then he released his first solo album before joining Derek and the Dominos, who gave us the song "Layla", which was about George Harrison's wife Patti, whom he later married (and divorced). He spent a few years after that kicking his drug habbits, then went on to regularly release solo albums throughout the 80's and 90's, and doesn't seem to be slowing down. There's more to his story, but I've got limited space here.
Eric has done blues, reggae, country, contemporary, and (practically) metal. He's done more than that, it's just all I know for certain that he's done. His roots are firmly set in blues, though. He's even friends with B.B. King, and the two of them did an album together. Lately he's been getting back to blues hardcore, and being the blues fan I am, I can't disagree with his choice. If you've never heard his work, you both live under a rock, and should go pick up his Unplugged album.
