THE VILLAGE - ACTING?

While I was watching The Village, I couldn't help but feel like everyone was doing a bad job of acting. Now, I've seen some of these actors in other movies, and I know they can act at least better than this. Sigourney Weaver may not be the best actress, but her delivery in The Village just seemed... well... bad. I don't know where all I've seen William Hurt, but I know he was in Dark City, and I've watched that quite a few times. I thought he did alright there. It wasn't just the delivery, though, it was the way they spoke. Ivy refers to her sister as her "cherished one". I don't think they spoke like that back in the 19th century.

Of course, that's just it, isn't it? It's not the 19th century. It's modern times. It takes place right now. The elders all used to live in the city (Philadelphia, was it?). They all decided to start living isolated from the rest of the world, pretending it was the end of the 19th century. So, naturally, they had to change the way they talked to the way they thought people would talk at the end of the 19th century. So, the characters actually were, in a way, acting. The kids wouldn't have known any other way of speaking, so they would've spoken in a similar manner.

So that's it. It wasn't bad acting on behalf of the actors, it was simply acting on the part of the characters, or an imitation of their manner.
